A beginners guide to the acoustic guitar

Looking for an Acoustic that’s fits you

This is where people go wrong when learning the acoustic guitar. They start listening to others on what acoustic to buy.  Its your decision in the end but choosing the wrong acoustic guitar in the beginning will cause you to give up on learning. Spending less money on an acoustic doesn’t mean you’re getting the best acoustic to learn on. Saving your money for a few extra weeks will be worth it in the long run to get a great learning guitar. In my opinion you will spend $500 or more on a good acoustic that has good playability.

Your comfortable is different from mine

A big acoustic guitar like a Dreadnought may not be the correct size for you to start with. They make a small Dreadnought that’s a great starter acoustic.  The ooo acoustics that Martin Guitar makes are hands down the greatest sounding guitars out there but are on the pricey side.

It’s best to just get out and play every kind you can think of.Go in every music store and every pawn shop and look for the one that feels right for you not someone else.

What strings do I need as a beginner

Again ,you want what fits your style of play and not someone else’s

I put a set of light to med light on all of my students acoustic guitars before we ever get started for the fact that it’s easier on their fingers when pressing down in the beginning.

A lighter string is more forgiving for a beginner. It’s going to make the beginner acoustic player less frustrated with the playability than if he or she was playing heavy or med strings.

Be very careful when putting on a thinner gauge string because they are more likely to break when installing or putting them on.

My hands don’t want to work correctly

In the beginning your hands are going to want to do their own thing.

From strumming to chord changing and finger style picking it’s not so easy to just pick it up and go.

You are going to have to train your hands fingers and feet to all do something different when playing. I like to call it muscle memory. You do something so many times you start to do it with no thought process involved. Your hands fingers and arms will learn the motions they need to take and the position they need to be in for what chords and what strumming pattern to use.

It will all fall in to place and just start to happen before you know it.

Learn on your time with no pressure

Music teachers are great and most of use have had a few in our life. But when I was learning the acoustic guitar I was being rushed by the teacher to keep it moving and I wanted to take longer learning the basics. It was way more frustrating having more and more info being put on you each lesson and not having time to absorb what I had just learned.

The best thing to do is find a guitar mentor or online lessons that allow you to hit play and pause when ever you want to learn. Otherwise you’re getting frustrated thinking this is not for you and give up.Learning the acoustic guitar is only as hard as you make it.

Learning your basics first

Once I learned the basics I was able to play so many songs I liked. The more songs you learn the more you build your guitar confidence up until your attempting bigger and harder songs.  The basics are the backbone of the learning process.

By learning your basic 7 chords in the beginning you give yourself the start that puts you in the livingroom playing for the party or gathering or even on stage for hundreds.

The Easy E Chords

This is one of the easiest chords to learn and play. It was my first chord that I learned on the acoustic guitar. Most people can play the E or E Minor chord right off the bat.

The E chords are in so many songs you hear everyday on the radio. Its an easy transition chord as well.

The Converse Wha Pedal

So this was prototyped a few years back around 2013. Converse has taken target audience to a new level.  It doesn’t matter if your playing with an acoustic electric or an electric.

They have taken the famous converse shoe of all time ,the Chuck Taylor and put a Wha pedal in the sole of the shoe.  This iconic shoe is worn by so many famous singer songwriters in the business not to mention all of you out there that put them on.

I have mixed feeling on this product. My negative thinking goes to a guitar player forgetting he or she is one with the equipment and set the guitar down and take of for a stage dive or is just feeling the music and want to move around, You can’t. If you forget your going to be dragging your D-28 across the stage with you with bad results.

I would love to try out.  If I get my hands on a pair, I’m gong to do a video review on what I think.  But…this is a wonderful idea for all of us on the go.  You have a wha pedal with you as long as you are wearing the shoes. Also want to know if it makes the shoe less comfortable.

Using furniture polish on your acoustic guitar

At first I was worried about to wax built up from the polish but after reading further I found out that lemon oil is great for the guitars wood.  I started using Pledge a few years ago along with some lemon oil.

I use the Pledge for the polished parts of the acoustic guitar and the lemon oil on the unfinished parts.  (Bare wood) Dunlap is what I use the most.  It gives to wood or what ever type of material your fretboard is made of a new look to it.

Do not use the lemon oil on the finished wood.  Only use it on unfinished wood like the bridge or the fretboard.

You should only need to use the lemon oil 1 to 2 times a year really not much more than that.

Be smart when you’r changing your strings. Try cleaning your acoustic while you have the strings off that way everything is easy to get to. You can use any furniture polish as long as you check the contents of it.  So many diff types of guitar polish and oils out there it’s all in preference.

It’s called a Nut people

The nut is the slender ,rectangular white piece on the top of the neck that the strings rest in before they head down the neck to there designated spots.

The left side of the Nut you will see the low E string and the A and D. On the right side you will see the G,B and high E.

If your strings are wound wrong ,the strings will not sit in the Nut properly and will cause a chain of problems.

If your a beginner acoustic player this is a great album for learning new chords like Em7 along with some not so hard lead parts.

The song is tuned a half a step down ,so if you’re  trying to play along with the song it wont jive.

Acoustic buddy: I suck today

” I suck today” meaning you can’t seem to hold those chords right and they won’t ring clear. This is something everyone goes through, even veterans.

You will have days where your fingers don’t want to work right, or your hand cramps. It helps to practice as much as possible and then those days get to be few and far between.

Never give up ,its just a wooden box with strings….Chris Smith ,Fl

Your mind is your worst enemy. It’s all part of the process to be horrible at first and then it all starts to come together. Songs get easier to pick up on ,and the more you sit and play with other fellow acoustic lovers the better you get. Martin guitar owners say all the time that your acoustic sounds its worst the first day you get it. The older it gets the better it sounds. The same with us as acoustic players. The longer we play the better we get. It’s impossible to suck worst then when you started.

I would love to see your videos if you care to share your accomplishments and what your learning. Justinbeene@me.com
